Ancient Hindu God Teikirshy

India is a land of Gods, rich in traditions, cultures, religion, Heritage, etc. It is also said that we Indian's worship more than 33 crore gods in different forms. Every god has its own special ability and a background story, every god or goddess is worshipped with complete faith, Rituals every devotee follow them to please their Deity according to the religion many customs & traditions are followed. It is believed that if someone prays with complete faith All wishes will be fulfilled. Teikirshy is also one of those ancient Hindu gods.

History of Dravidians:



If we take a look at Indian HISTORY India was Invaded by Aryans and Dravidians, According to a theory  Dravidian came to India or 
invaded India from central Asia in 1500 BCE And Aryans came between 1700-2000 BCE. According to another theory after the first Aryan invasion, the Dravidians escaped into the hills, making the hills the safe ground for the Dravidians.

There were many tribes living in the community. Among the jungle tribes in the Indus Valley were the Bhils, Kols, Santals, Kukis, Todas, and Oraos, some of which were Dravidians. The prominent language groups of the Dravidians today are Brahue in the north, Gonds in the north and central India, Kannadigan in Karnataka and Maharastra, Malayali in Kerala, Tamil in the South, and Telugu in Andhra Pradesh. Inscriptions at Harappan sites suggest a resemblance to the old Tamil that is spoken by Dravidians in southern India.


Teikirshy is an ancient Hindu god 

According to Indian records toda, humans or followers are Dravidians who stays inside the Nilgiri mountains of India in Tamil Nadu. They worship This Ancient  Diety Teikirshy.
Teikirshy is one among ancient Hindu Lords that are still surviving within the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu It is a Hill Tribe that has its traditions and customs Rituals and Lifestyle. Their way of lifestyles, customs, and legends died out due to growing western influences as other traditions are dying.

History of Toda Before the 18th century



Before the 18th century and British colonization, the Toda tribe existed locally but with different ethnic groups. This includes Kota, Badaga, and Karumba. 
They used to live in a loose caste-like society, in which the toda followers were considered very high in terms of rank. But due to western culture adaptation, the toda population has decreased in the range of 800 in the twentieth century.


About Toda Culture & Religion :

Toda religion is a very unique different and Interesting community. As Buffalo is considered sacred among the Todas. Everything is related directly to it, According to History, The Todas believe that goddess Teikirshy and her brother first created the sacred buffalo and then the first Toda man. The first Toda woman was created from the right rib of the first Toda man. 

The Toda religion high-class men as holy milkmen, The Milkmen were given sacred status as priests of the holy dairy as they look after the Buffalo. the holy milkman not only enjoys the highest rank but also follows some restrictions as he was prohibited from walking across bridges while in office. He had to ford rivers by foot, or by swimming. The people are prohibited from wearing shoes or any type of foot covering etc. as other Hindu temples follow too.

Toda temples are constructed in a circular pit lined with stones. The idol of Goddess Ancient Hindu God Teikirshy is also found they were almost similar in appearance and construction to Toda huts. Women are not allowed to enter or go close to these huts that are designated as temples.

Food and Shelter Toda community:

The Toda tribe people traditionally live in small settlements called mund or dogles. It consists of three to seven small thatched houses made of straw and bamboo,dogles, are of an oval, pent-shaped construction. They are usually 10 feet (3 m) high, 18 feet (5.5 m) long and 9 feet (2.7 m) wide. They are built of bamboo fastened with rattan and are thatched. Thicker bamboo canes are arched to give the hut its basic bent shape. Thinner bamboo canes (rattan) are tied close and parallel to each other over this frame. Dried grass is stacked over this as thatch. Each hut is enclosed within a wall of loose stones.
Huts are constructed in the shape of half-barrels and located across the slopes of the pasture, on which they keep their domestic buffalo.  

 Food will include all dairy products as Their economy was pastoral, based on the buffalo, whose dairy products they traded with neighboring peoples of the Nilgiri Hills

Rituals & Traditions for Marriages & Funeral:

Toda religion features the sacred buffalo; consequently, all the rituals are performed for all dairy activities as well as for the ordination of dairymen-priests. The funeral rites of the Todas are very different complex poetic songs about the cult of the buffalo are composed and chanted which are melodious.

The Funeral Rites of the Toda's are totally different They are nature friendly. Traditionally, the Toda have two funerals, GREEN Funeral & DRY Funeral When some die only the toda community people gather no outsiders allowed to attend the ceremony. 

The first Funeral ceremony is named “Patchai Kedu” or GREEN funeral. Among the many rituals is one in which one or two buffaloes are killed, after which the deceased’s hand is made to clutch the buffaloes’ horns three times. The deceased dead body is handled carefully  Once the rituals are completed, the body is cremated and buried so that the deceased body decomposes to mix with Mother nature.

The second Funeral Ceremony is referred to as a DRY funeral, where a bone or some ashes of the deceased are used in the ceremony.

According to the survey, the second funeral is rarely celebrated today, as it is compulsory that individual family presence & preferences is necessary.



Toda community Houses

 Occupations and Clothing:


As Buffalo is considered Sacred. So Their main occupation will be rearing Buffaloes and selling Diary products which they trade with the neighboring villages of the Nilgiri Hills.

Their clothes are rich in the culture of crafts as well and they are also well-known for their jewelry and elegantly draped cloaks and shawls some clothes are embellished with traditional black and crimson embroidery. which looks very attractive. Some women are found wearing the traditional “poothkuli,” a handmade embroidered shawl. They looked so beautiful.


Conclusion: India is very Rich in Traditions and Cultural heritage we have many gods to worship.Whether it be a Trible god-like Teikirshy who is worshipped by a few communities or by Other Gods or deities who are equally powerful to fulfill the wishes of the worshipper.
